Oyo State Police Command has arrested an alleged notorious armed robber, Jimoh Yekini (a.k.a. Ejo) who had been terrorizing some areas in Ibadan. According to the Police Commissioner, Alhaji Tambari Yabo Mohammed, the suspect had been involved in some violent robbery attacks and had been on the Command’s wanted list until luck ran out on him on August 12, about 6.00 pm.

According to the Police, “a piece of information was received at the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) office that one notorious criminal, Jimoh Yekini, a.k.a ‘Ejo’, who has been on police wanted listed, was sighted at Agbeni area robbing from house to house.

“Sequel to the report, SARS operatives swung into action and stormed the scene, where he was arrested after a long struggle with the help of the community. The arrested suspect is being wanted for being the arrow head of the communal clash that occurred in December 2011 at Agbokojo /Foko area in which several people were killed, many houses, shops, mosques and churches were razed and assorted weapons like AK 47 and other dangerous weapons were freely used by the warring factions.

“He is also wanted in connection with several armed robbery cases in the area.”
The suspect, who was paraded along with about 10 other suspects accused of sundry criminal offences, had, before his arrest, attacked and killed one Kamoru Lamidi ‘m’ during the robbery incident at Agbeni”, sources learnt.

When he was interrogated, Yekini agreed that Kamoru Lamidi actually died through him, but insisted he mistakenly stoned him while fighting with a son of the deceased.

“They call me ejo (snake) because I am stubborn. I was actually at the scene where churches, mosques and shops were burnt. But I was only throwing stones at the people who came to attack us. I was fighting with a friend of mine (Sumaila Jala) one day, and in the course of it, I stoned him.

The stone mistakenly hit his father on the head and he fell. When I threw the second stone, it also hit him on the head, but I did not know it was not Jala. The second stone I threw is here in front of me”, he confessed.

The Police Commissioner, who has just been elevated to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG, Zone 3, Yola), however, said the suspect attacked the deceased while robbing his household.
